This article analyses the tradwife phenomenon through Alexandra Deem’s volume The Tradwife Revolution: An Ethnography of Trad Futurism on Social Media. Drawing on an ethnographic investigation of online trad communities, the author demonstrates that tradwives are not a passing social media trend, but represent a deeper transformation of contemporary sensibility, defined through the category of trad futurism: an approach in which the recovery of the past serves to redesign an alternative future, capable of responding to the contradictions of neoliberalism. By skillfully exploiting algorithmic logics and an apparently reassuring visual and verbal rhetoric, these influencers promote a reactionary, antifeminist, and racist ideology. Rather than dismantling the logics of capitalism, tradwives intensify its mechanisms of exploitation, ultimately reproducing the very dynamics from which they claim to be fleeing.

Il saggio analizza il fenomeno delle tradwives attraverso il volume The Tradwife Revolution: An Ethnography of Trad Futurism on Social Media di Alexandra Deem. Basandosi su un’indagine etnografica delle comunità trad online, l’autrice dimostra come le tradwives non siano un fenomeno social passeggero, ma rappresentino una trasformazione più profonda della sensibilità contemporanea, definita attraverso la categoria di trad futurism: un approccio in cui il recupero del passato è funzionale a riprogettare un futuro alternativo, capace di rispondere alle contraddizioni del neoliberismo. Sfruttando abilmente le logiche algoritmiche e una retorica visiva e verbale apparentemente rassicurante, queste influencer veicolano un’ideologia reazionaria, antifemminista e razzista. Anziché scardinare le logiche del capitalismo, le tradwives ne esasperano i meccanismi di sfruttamento, finendo per riprodurre le stesse dinamiche da cui dichiarano di fuggire.
